Which artists influence me?
The list grows and changes all the time, but the durable ones are: Barbara Rae (whom I’ve had the privilege of meeting and interviewing), Ralph Steadman, Grayson Perry, David Hockney, David Gentleman, Edward Bawden, Lucian Freud, Quentin Blake, Degas, Marino Marini, Howard Hodgkin, Paula Rego, Brian Wildsmith, John Piper, Edward Gorey, Maggie Hamblin, Henry Moore, Manet, Chagall, Paul Klee,...

Oliver Jeffers →
Oliver Jeffers a-l-m-o-s-t makes me want to give up illustration…. his work is so rich in ideas, he thinks laterally, and mixes media in the most creative way. On the other hand his work is so special and his sketchbooks so full of ideas, I want to get with paint, scissors and magazines and make a mess.  I love the mix of photos with drawing and painting, and the use of physical objects as...

anna violet: E-mail interview with Jill Calder →
There is an interesting interview with Jill Calder here, and Anna Violet’s illustrations are gently nice.

Jill Calder is a UK based illustrator,... →
Well, now this I really like.  I love the colour, I love the inky lines, I like the wit, the lettering, everything about it.

I have just discovered this amazing illustrator.  His work is remarkable in a number of ways.  I love the daubs of bright colour everywhere, the mixing of media, collage, photos, paint, pattern and print; the addition of ears, horns and other ephemera on otherwise glamorous women.  I searched for images of fruit and veg for my current project, and found them in animations for Nigella Bites....

Decisions, decisions
At some point I am going to have to to decide on whether, for this assignment, I am going to submit digital drawings, Pen and ink, or painted drawings. I guess I will just have to experiment some more, and then decide on the approach I’m going to take.My inclination is always to do something scratchy and messy but that might be not what is required for the brief. And another thing, (there...

Working towards assignment 2
This one is quite hard. It’s amazing how designing something with some pieces of fruit and vegetables becomes quite complicated. I’ve looked at a lot of other people’s designs of fruit and vegetables, and there is a lot of quite dull stuff out there. Of course there is Emma Dibben, whose work I really like, but apart from that I have not seen much to inspire me. I think...

Grayson Perry at the British Museum →
This was my favourite exhibition this year, Perry makes being an artist seem so delightful. It’s all play! I wrote a review of it on weareoca. I like the way he mixes comic elements (such as the use of speech bubbles) in with his high art pottery. The transparency with which he translates research into executed artwork too is an inspiration.
